Vast numbers of ever present elephant are joined in the dry season by the highest number of wildlife outside the Serengeti.
Tarangire gets it's name from the river that threads its way through the park. During the dry season from June to September the river draws animal herds migrating from the dry Massai Steppe. Following in their path are lion, leopard and other predators.
Among the 500 plus birds recorded here are the kori bustard, ostrich, hornbill and screeching flocks of colorful yellow-collared lovebirds.
Highlights: Spotting the tree climbing pythons and forests of baobab trees.
Tanzania’s smallest National Park. The varying altitude provides a variety of vegetation zones to support numerous animal species.
Close to Arusha town, the park features Mount Meru, the Momella Lakes and the Ngurdoto Crater.
The wildlife varies with the altitude which ranges from swampland at 1,500 meters, to forest at 4,500 meters. Over 400 species of migrant and resident birds have been recorded here. Black and white colobus monkeys, baboons, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, leopard, hyena, zebra and a wide variety of antelope can be found in the park.
Highlights: Climbing Mount Meru, canoe safaris on the lake and walking safaris around Ngurudoto Crater are added attractions to the park.
This bizarrely beautiful soda lake attracts sometimes hundreds of thousands of flamingoes.
The lake lies to the north of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, on the border of Kenya. Lake Natron's extreme alkalinity is caused by sodium leaching from the nearby active volcano Oldonyo Lengai.
The algae growing within the lake is a major source of food for flamingoes. The lake is one of the most important flamingo breeding sites in the world.
Highlights: Flamingo watching, climbing Oldonyo Lengai and bush walking are the attractions of visiting Lake Natron.
The soda lake, on the south west border of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is home for the Hadzabe tribe, Tanzania's last hunter gatherers.
This remote and seldom visited area is hot and dry but worth a visit to experience the harshness of what African bush life is like and to stand beneath the shadow of the Great Rift Valley escarpment.
Highlights: Hiking the Great Rift Valley escarpment, joining the Hadzabe for a bush walk. Access to the soda lake is by foot only.
