Visit Lushoto in the Usambara Mountains
Stay in St Eugene's Hostel or Mullers Mountain Lodge - 5 days.
Add to your Kilitreks and Safaris Tanzania vacation package a visit to the unspoiled Usambara mountains
Lushoto is a small town located within the Eastern Arc mountains and home to the Sambaa cultivating tribe. The friendly welcome and the striking green mountains make this a spectacular hiking and cycling area.
Day 1: Transfer by private vehicle from Moshi to either St Eugene's Hostel or Mullers Mountain Lodge near to the town of Lushoto. On arrival you can spend the afternoon exploring by foot or car.
Day 2: Walk from the town through local farms and villages to Irente Viewpoint, overlooking the Massai Steppe. Visit Irente Farm for a tranquil picnic lunch in the shady garden. For the less energetic visitor, both the viewpoint and the farm can be visited by car along unmade roads. 3 to 4 hrs walk.
Day 3: Visit the Magamba Rainforest. The walking tracks take you through former colonial settlements and camphor wood forests, glimpsing views over Lushoto and the Massai Steppe. You can also explore Kiguu Hakwewa Hill. This huge excavation was used as a bunker in the second world war by German residents. 5 to 6 hrs walk.
Day 4: Drive to Gologolo, a beautiful but obscure mountain area. Hike through spectacular montane rain forest and picnic under ancient trees. Then on to Shume where you may catch a glimpse of Kilimanjaro. 4 to 5 hr walk.
Day 5: A relaxing morning before starting the return journey to Moshi.
