Lake Natron

This bizarrely beautiful soda lake attracts sometimes hundreds of thousands of  flamingo. 

lake natron flamingoThe lake lies of the beaten track to the north of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, on the border of Kenya.

Lake Natron's extreme alkalinity is caused by sodium leaching from the nearby active volcano Oldonyo Lengai.

The algae growing within the lake is a major source of food for flamingoes. The lake is one of the most important flamingo breeding sites in the world. 

Highlights: Flamingo watching, climbing Oldonyo Lengai volcano (suspended due to high volcanic activity), bush walking, seeing hominid footprints (considered over 4 million years old), visiting the waterfalls
