Climb Oldonyo L'engai, an active volcano in Tanzania
'Mountain of God' to the Massai people
The Maasai people believed the mountain was home to the god Eng'ai who signaled her anger with eruptions and drought.
Oldonyo Lengai is one of the highest of a chain of nine volcanic mountains formed in the Ngorongoro Highlands millions of years ago.
Volcano hiking is a unique experience and especially hiking on Oldonyo Lengai, which is unique among volcano's. It is the only active volcano erupting sodium rich Natrocarbonalite lava in the world. The lava is half the temperature of the more common silica rich basalt lava, extremely water soluble and therefore easily washed away by rains.
Oldonyo langai is an active volcano, tours may therefore be suspended at short notice if climbing is considered unsafe.
This tour is offered as an add-on for a minimum of 4 people booking any safari or Kilimanjaro package.
