Elephants are born with an incredible mass of 77-113 kg. But this weight is only 4% of an adult female's weight and only 2% of an adult male's. A baby elephant may drink up to 11.4 liters of milk a day and will begin weaning after the first year of life. Around two years of age, they will start to be more independent in their feeding habits but will continue taking their mothers milk until they are up to ten years old. An African elephant calf is entirely dependent (emotionally and physically) on his/her mother for up to five years. The young calves are looked after by their mothers, but also by other females of the herd. Mothers care for and interact differently with male and female infants. |
