Visit the heart of the Massai Steppe
Lendanai Massai Mountain climb - 3 days.
Remote bush camping in an area where few tourists visit. Taking you to the heart of Massai culture with a climb of Lendanai Mountain.
The mountain provides the main source of water and medicines for the Massai community who live beneath its shadow. Visitors are asked to be respectful. This is an opportunity to experience one of the cultural and geological landmarks of the Massai Steppe. Lendenai means the place of roots in Massai language (this is an apt description as you will see your guide cutting the little used path with his panga, a sharp knife). Lendenai Mountain is an exhilarating climb of 2,123 meters.
Day 1: After breakfast you will be picked up from your location for the drive to Orkesumet or Lendenai. The journey takes approximately 4 to 5 hours. The road is rough in parts, but the changing scenery, birds and occasional glimpses of wildlife compensate any discomfort. A bush picnic is provided. Your destination will give you the opportunity to observe life in a remote Massai community. Dinner and overnight camping.
Day 2: After breakfast you will be driven to the foot of Lendenai mountain to meet the village elders before beginning the climb. The steep forest path follows the flow of water to the source. The summit can be reached in 4 to 5 hours. Here you have a relaxing picnic while enjoying spectacular views of the Blue Mountains (part of the Eastern Arc chain), Nyumba ya Mungu lake and sometimes Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru. Buffaloes and monkeys inhabit the mountain but they are very shy. The descent will take approximately 2 to 3 hours. You will return to the village for dinner and overnight camping.
Day 3: After a relaxing breakfast you can visit the colorful center of community life - the water hole, before starting the return journey to Moshi.
